Word Counter
Count words, unique words, and characters in your text as you type, with no signup, no upload, and no word limit of any kind. Unique words too, live.
How to use
- Paste your text into the box.
- Read the counts as you type.
- Copy the numbers into your document.
A word counter reports how many words a text contains, how many of those words are unique, and how many characters they use. Writers use it to hit a length target, and students use it to check an assignment limit.

Questions about word counter
- How does it decide what counts as a word?
- Any run of characters separated by a space counts as a word, as long as it contains at least one letter or a digit. A symbol on its own does not count.
- Does my text get uploaded?
- No. Counting runs in your browser, so the text stays on your device and is gone when you close the tab.
- How are accented and non-Latin words counted?
- A word is counted once, whatever script it uses, so a Japanese or Arabic word counts the same as an English one.
