HTTP Status Code Lookup
Search every assigned HTTP status code with its name, class, and what it means for a request, from 100 informational to 511 network authentication.
How to use
- Type a code such as 404, or search by name or description.
- Read the meaning and the class.
- Search for a word such as rate to browse related codes.
An HTTP status code is the first digit group of a response line. The class tells you who is responsible for the outcome: 1xx is progress, 2xx is success, 3xx is a redirect, 4xx is a client problem, and 5xx is a server problem.
Enter a code to see its meaning.

Questions about http status code lookup
- What is the difference between 401 and 403?
- 401 means the request lacks valid authentication credentials and expects them. 403 means the server understood who you are and refused anyway.
- Is 418 a joke?
- It is assigned as a teapot, and some servers still use it as a playful rejection. Treat unexpected 4xx responses as a real signal rather than a joke.
- Which codes are not in the list?
- Only unassigned numbers are missing, plus a few codes that are used inside protocols rather than in HTTP responses.
