MIME Type Lookup
Find the MIME type for a file extension or the extensions for a MIME type, covering images, fonts, documents, archives, audio, video, and code.
How to use
- Enter an extension such as svg, or switch direction and enter a media type.
- Read the type and what it is used for.
- Copy the value into your server or upload config.
A MIME type tells a browser and a server what a file actually is, separately from its name. This lookup maps a file extension to its media type and back, which is what you need when setting a content type or fixing a download.

Questions about mime type lookup
- Why does this matter for security?
- A server that sends the wrong content type can let a browser run a file as script. Never trust an uploaded file name or its client-supplied type.
- What is the charset suffix for?
- Media types such as text or JSON often add a charset parameter. The lookup strips it before matching, so a value with a suffix still resolves.
- Why is JavaScript not a standard text type?
- JavaScript has its own media type, and it is executable, which is why a strict content security policy treats script sources separately from other files.
